Author, Ry Sloth, visits our school

On, Wednesday, February 16, author Ry Sloth visited our elementary.  He shared his love of sports, especially football!  The kids loved to see his old jerseys and helmets from the Cyclones and Barnstormers.  He talked with the kids about dreaming big and not giving up!  Everyone needs to keep trying to find what they are good at.  He shared his rough draft of his book that he wrote in High School, and explained to the kids the changes and editing that has been done through the years to publish his book, Sammy Sloth Sport Superstar.  He shared why he chose the animals he did, and family members names that he used.  After reading his book to us, he encouraged the kids to use their imaginations as they too can become authors!  Then kids had a chance to buy his book, and Ry autographed it for them.

Happy Valentine's Day

On Monday, February 14, the 1st graders had their Valentine Party!  They each designed their own mailbox, and made valentines to deliver to everyone in the class.  Thanks Moms for helping with the games and snacks.  The kids had a great time!

Basketball Assembly

On Friday, February 11, Coach Olson wrapped up his PE unit of basketball, with an assembly to honor all his students in grades K-8 and their accomplishments!  Awesome job of bringing younger kids, older kids, and teachers together to celebrate all your hard work!  Elementary kids were honored at half time for free throws, hot shot, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5 - all were presented with a certificate.  The start of the 2nd half, there was an "injured" 8th grader.  Thanks to Ethan, he was ready to sub and help out the 8th graders.  I believe Ethan scored 3 baskets to help them close in on the teachers.  In the end the teachers won 31-30.  Great fun and sportsmanship was had by all :)  The elementary students entertained the crowd by wearing their jerseys ( a gift from Coach Olson )  and doing the "Interlude" dance!

We All Fit In Assembly

On February 9th, we traveled to Reinbeck for a "Fit" Assembly.  Thanks to Millenium Physical Therapy in Hudson for coming to our school and helping us to get fit!  We learned about healthy eating, making good choices, different muscles in our body and how to stretch them correctly, and most importantly - HOW TO MOVE and BE ACTIVE!!

Field Trip to Gallagher Bluedorn

The K-2 kids were treated to a play at the Gallagher Bluedorn on Tuesday, February 8th.  Thanks to the PTO/Impact for sponsoring this event!  We got to see 3 short plays performed: There's An Alligator Under My Bed, A Nightmare in My Closet, and Something in My Attic.  These are all based on books by the children's author, Mercer Mayer.  That has really sparked an interest in my kids to read Mercer Mayer books, we LOVE the Little Critter Books.  We even enjoyed going to www.littlecritter.com to learn more!

100 Days of School!!

On Monday, January 24th, GR celebrated their 100th day of school.  The Gladbrook Elementary recognized the day with several activities.  The kindergarten made 100 day t-shirts, the 1st grade made visors, and the 2nd grade made 100 day glasses.  In the afternoon the kids were divided into 3 groups where they made a 100 sign, wrote numbers to 100, and drew what their teachers would look like at 100 years old.  The final activity was counting out 100 balloons in the gym, then popping them to discover a "prize" inside!
